  Local Engagement

TakingITGlobal's network of youth leaders is unparalleled with established memberships even in countries such as Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. Whether they are entrepreneurs, students, young politicians, media personalities, or activists, it is common for many of a country's key youth leadership to be members of the online community.

As TIG has grown there is tremendous pressure to provide more intensive programming at the local level. Young people are demanding training, support, recognition, financing, voice, and opportunities to get involved in their local communities. Our services are only as relevant as they are accessible to people in languages they speak, and through a format they can access, and implementing programs to bridge the gap between the online tools and offline work will play a critical part in increasing the effectiveness of the TIG network.

Local Languages

In response to demand from its membership, TakingITGlobal has developed ground-breaking technology that allows its online efforts to be translated into any language by teams of virtual volunteers around the world. The website is now available in 12 languages including: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Dutch, and Mandarin Chinese.

Local Online Communities

TIG has also created Country Sites - national youth portals for every country in the world - and is working closely with volunteer members to develop a firm base of local content. Certain cities also have their own portals that provides local and regional member-created content.

Open Forums

In addition to these web-based efforts, TIG is encouraging its members to run open-space Open Forums in their communities, meeting in schools, community halls, and other public spaces, to explore the Monthly Themes from a local perspective, while sharing the results back with other members of the global online community.

Creating Local Connections

In 2004, TakingITGlobal piloted a project in Russia, to create a comprehensive model of local engagement. By connecting youth with youth-serving and/or youth-led organizations, resources could be shared, duplication of efforts could be eliminated and a large-scale network of like-minded groups could be created. Creating Local Connections supports local partners to develop intensive online and offline youth information resources, support independent youth media initiatives, promote cultural and artistic expression, and offer training and capacity-building for youth leaders. Following the success of CLC Russia, TakingITGlobal expanded the CLC program to Canada and West Africa.
