Issue-based Initiatives
TakingITGlobal is collaborating with several institutions to provide thought-leadership on the development of youth programming, mobilize young people around critical issues, and develop collaborative frameworks to match the interests and projects of our young members with the interests and resources of mainstream organizations.
Key Initiatives:
TakingITGlobal is catalyzing and supporting coalitions of young people to take action around issues at the top of the international agenda:
Millennium Development Goals: The eight goals as set by the United Nations provide an overarching framework for action which addresses global, economic, social and environmental challenges. TakingITGlobal has undertaken several projects to increase awareness and promote action among Canadian and international youth.
HIV/AIDS: As an organizing member of Toronto Youth Force, TakingITGlobal is actively involved in ensuring youth participation at the International AIDS Conference in 2006. One of the highlights was the production of a documentary film following 3 youth delegates - preview it here! The next conference is scheduled for 2008 in Mexico City, and together with the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS, will be leveraging our technological innovation and expertise to enhance youth delegate participation.
Digital Divide: In 2006, TakingITGlobal assumed management of an online community for educators, telecentre practitioners and people interested in the digital divide, the Digital Divide Network. Since its inception in 1999, this valuable resource has grown in size and influence, with over 20,000 registered members and over 150 user-generated issues and discussions. The digital divide is manifested in several ways such as literacy, usability, and bandwidth issues. Given that concerns about the digital divide are so broad, the people who work to bridge it come from varied backgrounds and interests. The website was an Official Honoree of the 11th Annual Webby awards.
Past initiatives
In 2002, TakingITGlobal partnered with youth organizations, UNDP and UNICEF to create a website promoting the youth presence at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
TakingITGlobal is a Collaborating Organization in the Global Youth Employment Summit Campaign, as well as the Campaign's technology partner. Launched in September 2002 at the Alexandria Summit, there are now 60 YES Country that shape national policies and promote best-practices.
