Issue 2: As One - Canadian Youth Working Towards the Millennium Development Goals
In 2000, at the United Nations Millennium Summit, 189 nations pledged to end the conditions and precipitating factors of poverty that people all over the world face. They defined a number of targets and indicators to mark progress and set a timeline. These became known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). There are eight MDGs:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development
Issue 2 of TIG Magazine: As One is a collection of short articles written by Canadian youth who are making sure, in some way or another, that these goals become reality. Each of the goals depends on the others, and we depend on each other to accomplish them. The articles demonstrate that, at home or abroad, it's time to act as one.
This issue was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
